With extreme cold forecasted over the next few days the Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is advising everyone to take precautions when going outside.
Low enough temperatures can cause very serious health conditions and even death. According to the Health Unit unprotected skin can freeze in as little as 10 to 30 minutes and the risk of hypothermia is increased. The Health Unit says while everyone is at risk the elderly, young, people taking certain medications and those with pre-existing heath conditions are at a greater risk.
When temperatures fall so low the Health Unit suggests people check on family members or neighbours who may be isolated, disabled or living alone that are at a greater risk. Other precautions the Health Unit suggest are:
- Wear layers of warm clothing including hat, mitts and jacket
- Drink warm, non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages
- Cover exposed skin surfaces when outdoors
- Maintain a heated environment of around 20 Celsius or 68 Fahrenheit
- Be aware of how your medications or health conditions may increase risk
- Be aware of the early signs of frostbite and hypothermia
- Be aware of the dangers of using an oven or space heater as a heating device
- Keep a winter driving survival kit in your vehicle
- Check weather and road conditions before you travel
