The Leeds-Grenville branch of the Ontario SPCA is reminding pet owners that they aren’t the only ones who dislike bitter cold.
Cold weather can be harmful to your pets the same way it can be harmful to a person and the SPCA want to be sure animals are protected. Some precautions they suggest include not leaving pets outside for extended periods of time and dressing them in an animal coat or sweater. The chemicals used to melt ice can also irritate the pads on the bottom of cat’s and dog’s paws. Always wipe their feet with a damp towel after coming back inside.
The SPCA reminds dog owners that under Canadian law all animals must receive adequate shelter and care. They strongly recommend bringing your pet inside but you must provide adequate shelter and a constant supply of fresh water if you intend to leave your animal outside. The Standard of Care under the Ontario SPCA Act requires structurally sound enclosures that are weatherproof and insulated. If your dog is tied be sure the rope or chain moves freely and is not frozen in place.
Finally, never leave your animal in the car during cold weather. The SPCA says “if it’s too cold for you to go outside, it’s too cold for your pet”.
