Opp on the Trails

The Leeds detachment of the OPP is reminding the public that they will be on snowmobile trails all winter long.

Members of the OPP will take to the trails to make sure riders are following the rules while enjoying the snow. According to the OPP, many laws that can be applied to driving a car on the road also apply to snowmobiles. Speeding, failing to stop at a road crossing and impaired driving all carry penalties, like license suspensions and criminal charges. OPP Inspector Mark Francis says a rider with blood alcohol in the “warn range” can be issued the same three-day warning as drivers on the road. He adds that more serious offences will result in a full suspension and that consequences are tougher for repeat offenders.

The OPP says riders need the following on them while operating their snowmobile:

-valid driver’s license or snow vehicle operator license
-proof of snowmobile ownership
-sled registration, including properly placed registration numbers and validation stickers
-proof of sled insurance
-approved snowmobile helmet
-valid Snowmobile Trail Permit
