Town Hall Second Floor Closed

The second floor of Prescott’s Town Hall has been closed down due to asbestos.

According to a press release signed by Chief Administrative Officer Pierre Mercier during a structural condition assessment, part of the Asset Management planning the town is currently undertaking, asbestos was found in parts of the second floor. When town staff learned of the hazard they closed the floor immediately.

Mayor Brett Todd says it is disappointing and surprising because they renovation of Town Hall in 2003 should have addressed the issue. He adds that safety is their biggest concern so the second floor will be closed while council determines a course of action. Municipal offices have been moved to other parts of the building, with residents being served on the first floor and council meetings taking place on the third.

Todd finished by saying all options are on the table because, as discussed before, all of the windows in the building need to be replaced. The windows were also installed during the 2003 renovation. The town finished their statement by saying they would continue showing the same level of action, transparency and communication as the situation evolves.
