March is Music Therapy Month

Music Therapist Cordon Purcell wants you to know March is Music Therapy month.

According to Purcell March 1st was International Music Therapy Day and music therapists around the world use the month as a chance to teach communities about what music therapy can do. Music Therapy is music being used, by an accredited music therapist within a therapeutic relationship, to overcome mental barriers.

Purcell says music therapy can be used for just about everything because almost everyone connects to it in some way. She says it is often used in relation to mental illness but can also be helpful when re-training limb movement in people who have suffered certain paralysis.

Purcell is currently on contract at Brockville General Hospital and works on the mental health floor, running a group focused on working together and social goals. Music therapy is also often found in Long-term Care Homes according to Purcell because it can help get seniors moving while enjoying their time together.
