Augusta Township is keeping a close eye on the St. Lawrence after high water levels last year.
The Township says they will use information from South Nation Conservation, the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board and other agencies to keep the community up to date on the river. Hans Werner-Mackeler, Community Emergency Management with Augusta, says since March 26th the level of Lake Ontario has gone up by almost two and a half inches. According to him this is six inches higher than normal but still eight inches lower than it was last year.
According to Werner-Mackeler inflows at the Moses-Saunders Dam, the primary control point for this section of the St. Lawrence, are higher than average for this time of year. Cool dry conditions this week are expected to at least slow the lake rise but outflow at the dam may be the eighth highest ever at this time of year.
Anyone with questions about the River Watch Update can contact Werner-Mackeler at [email protected] or by calling 613-925-4231. Werner-Mackeler is only in the office part time so it is suggested any urgent issues be brought to the township directly.
