Brockville General Hospital is working with the Trillium Gift of Life Network to raise awareness about saving lives by registering as an organ donor.
According to the TGLN someone dies every three days in Ontario because they don’t get the transplant they need. BGH Doctor Jamie Hynd says the circumstances surrounding donation is usually a tragic one but the gift of life is an extremely generous thing. He says they use a great many things, ranging from organs to tissue like corneas. Even people who may think their organs would be deemed unacceptable are encouraged to register as donors according to Hynd.
There are a number of ways to register as a donor, including signing a registration card when you get your driver license and online at the BGH website. According to Hynd your family can also donate your organs after you’ve passed away.
Hynd adds you can avoid putting this pressure on your family by signing your donor card.
TGLN says only 30 per cent of the province is registered as a donor. A link to the online donor form can be found here.
