A product tanker that ran aground near Morrisburg has been freed. The Chem Norma has been stuck since Tuesday. The ship was pulled free yesterday afternoon. It is now undergoing an inspection process.
The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, Transport Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change were involved in the process of freeing the ship.
According to the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, all tankers that travel the St. Lawrence Seaway are double hulled vessels. The Chem Norma, carrying refined petroleum products, ran aground due to an issue with its rudder.
The ship did not block traffic along the seaway and no pollution has been observed.
