Counties Council spends $40,000 to improve cell, internet service

Counties Council is pushing forward with a project to improve cell service in Leeds and Grenville. The council approved spending $40,000 to help cover the costs to study the Canadian Radio and Television Commission’s basic service goal of 50/10 Mbps (Megabites per second) on Monday.

All thirteen Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus members are contributing to the study. The work will be completed this year by the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN). Council has also committed dollars for the EORN Cell Gap Project beginning next year.

The Counties contribution to the project will be over $600,000. Funds will be taken from reserved and repaid in installments starting in 2020.

In a report presented to council, EORN says the mobile broadband/cell gap project will add more than 3,000 jobs to the region.

EORN Is proposing a $213 million public-private partnership to improve both the reach and quality of cell services in rural Eastern Ontario.
