The Principal at a local private school is looking to raise some funds to build a new playground structure for her students.
Principal for St. Lawrence Academy Lynda Joanisse has entered the school into the 8th annual McDougall Family Fund Contest, which awards three prizes worth a total of $10,000 to local charities, non-profits, or community projects.
She says they are looking to raise around $35-40,000 to purchase a structure that suits their needs.
“We’re hoping to maximize the physical activity of older students, so what we’re probably looking at is some sort of true-climber and physical activity play structure,” Joanisse said.
Two years ago, the school was forced to take down its playground, after it failed to meet safety regulations.
Since then, the school’s Parents Association had raised over $22,000 to help fund a new structure, however, the one that was put in place currently takes up only a small part of the school’s overall playground space.
Joanisse says improving on the space would benefit not only their students, but the entire community.
“We have an open-welcoming space right in the middle of Prescott,” she said. “The community continually and constantly uses our facilities, outside especially, as a community playground.”
Joanisse says even if they do not win the contest, the school will work with the Parents Association to set up other fundraising opportunities in the future.
Winners of the McDougall Family Fund Contest will be announced Tuesday.
