Ground broken on Prescott’s new water tower

Construction work is now officially underway on Prescott’s new water tower.

Mayor Gauri Shankar, MPP Steve Clark, members of council and officials from Augusta and Edwardsburgh-Cardinal all attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the tower Friday afternoon.

The new facility is being partially funded by the federal and provincial governments. It’s being built next to the Alaine Chartrand Community Centre, Prescott’s new arena, which opened to the public earlier this year.

“To have two major projects in one town at one time was really something that made me so happy,” Clark said at the ceremony. “I know that [Chief Administrative Officer Matt Armstrong] knew that when I got the second call, about this contract, I said, ‘I’ve got to go buy a lottery ticket in Prescott this weekend, because this is great news.’”

The new tower will be larger than the current one, which Shankar says is more than 50 years old.

Clark and Shankar both thanked the representatives from Edwardsburgh-Cardinal and Augusta, whose communities are also helping pay for the new water tower.

“They’re a big part of our success, and why we’re able to get funding,” Shankar said. “So, it’s so important to work together as a team and you see that, with Prescott kind of being in the middle of all three of us, it’s good to make it grow.”

If you want to see it for yourself, it’s located at the corner of Sophia and Churchill Streets, right next to the arena parking lot.
