A familiar face is hoping to win the Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes riding for the federal Liberals.
Lorna Jean Edmonds, who ran for the Liberals in the recent provincial election, is now running federally and she says if she didn’t know voters issues before, she really understands them now.
Edmonds is the former Vice Provost for Global Affairs and International Studies, as well as a health sciences professor, at Ohio University and she says that gives her additional insights on how to deal with the top issue in the election, U.S. President Donald Trump.
While she says the provincial election focused on policy issues, Edmonds says the threat from tariffs and Trump has superseded any other issues and is first and foremost on the minds of the voters she’s spoken with.
“People are saying they can’t even look out onto the lakes (St. Lawrence River) without thinking about what’s going to happen to us because we are a border, so that is the number one issue at this time.”
Edmonds says she believes Prime Minister Mark Carney has the leadership to negotiate and navigate through this very difficult time.
Opposing Edmonds in the race are NDP candidate Paul Lancione, Conservative incumbent Michael Barrett, Green Party candidate Randi Ramdeen and Hailey Simpson of the People’s Party.
Election Day is Monday, Apr. 28.
