Close to 70 percent of elementary schools in the Upper Canada District School Board have ranked in the bottom half of the Fraser Institute’s new report card for Ontario elementary schools.
This caused Director of Education Stephen Sliwa to refute the rankings, stating that they show no evidence of improved student learning. He also criticizes them for not offering where the schools could be improved.
The rankings come out in the midst of the board’s pupil accommodation review to potentially close 29 schools in eastern Ontario, with most of those schools ranking in the bottom 50 percent.
Maynard Public School and Wellington Public School, both in Prescott, are ranked as the 7th and 8th worst elementary schools in the UCDSB, respectively.
