First-Past-The-Post System To Be Retained For 2018 Election

Committee of the Whole is sticking with what they know and keep the first-past-the-post voting system for the 2018 municipal election.

The provincial government has offered up two new voting systems, ranked choice voting and single transferable voting, to smaller municipalities for testing.

Mayor Brett Todd says he is an advocate for the first-past-the-post system and sees no reason for a change, and has heard no complaints about it at the municipal level.

Councillor Fraser Laschinger made the point of saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, which was reiterated by the Mayor.

It was also made aware that no other municipalities asked to participate chose to endorse the new voting systems.
