After failing to declare a car at the Prescott-Ogdensburg border crossing, an Ottawa man had to pay a hefty penalty.
The man had purchased a car in the United States, and to avoid paying the $700 in duties and taxes, claimed he was just borrowing it from a friend.
After further investigation of his phone and emails, border officers discovered proof of purchase of the car, forcing the man to pay $6,646 to get the car back after it had been seized.
Canada Border Services Agency says penalties can range from 25-80% of the value of goods that are not declared.
