Mayor Brett Todd has expressed interest in the town linking up with the Leeds and Grenville Immigration Partnership.
The immigration partnership is trying to make Leeds and Grenville more attractive to immigrants, which Program Manager Melissa Francis says will make up a majority of Canada’s workforce in the coming years.
The main factors that draw immigrants to areas are affordable housing, safety, and good schools according to Francis.
Francis says there are three types of immigrants that the groups work with: skilled workers, entrepreneurs, and international students.
Statistics show that 7% of Prescott’s current population – equalling 306 people – is made up of immigrants, from at least 26 different countries, who speak 17 different languages.
Members of council agreed that the program would coincide well with Prescott’s new Business Retention and Expansion group, which is looking to bring new jobs to the area.
