The St. Lawrence Seaway is set to open for this year on March 20th.
On that date, the locks will be removed, again allowing commercial boats and pleasure crafts access to the waterway.
Communications Officer with St. Lawrence Seaway Management, Andrew Bogora, says despite the recent warmer weather, the seaway still plans to open at its usual time, having opened on March 20th in 2007 and 2008 as well.
Bogora says the opening of the locks usually goes hand in hand with the turn of the season.
Bogora notes that although the waterway is once again open to pleasure crafts, the water is still very cold and can be icy and dangerous. Operators should adhere to the coast guard’s advice as to when it is safe to take boats and recreational crafts out again.
