The Grenville County OPP is scheduled to receive emergency fentanyl training on Monday in reaction to the increased use in Ontario and the overall drug crisis hitting Canada.
Grenville County OPP Inspector June Dobson says the training will be used to educate students on the deadly realities of the drug to help increase prevention.
While Dobson says Grenville County OPP officers have not come in contact with the drug in Prescott yet, fentanyl has been found in Brockville and in other regions across Eastern Ontario.
Dobson describes that the dangers of fentanyl arise from the varying potency in each dosage. She says users may try it for the first time and be fine afterwards, but a similar intake of the drug another time could be deadly.
In the Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit’s area between 2010 and 2014, there were 24 deaths caused by opioid overdoses.
