Council Decides On New Fire Hall Design

Decisions were made regarding the the interior and exterior design of Prescott’s new fire hall at a special council meeting last night.

A heritage design for the exterior of the building was chosen which council still want to tinker with. Councillors preferred the heritage look over the streamline design, but will have the architects brought to a meeting at town hall to discuss further changes and building materials. A date has not been set for the meeting yet.

Council also chose to move forward with a larger training room and community hall for the building. There was not a great deal of variance between the two options for the interior design, with Fire Chief Barry Moorehouse stating from the beginning that he wanted to keep it simple, with only the essentials needed for him to run the fire company.

Councillor Lee McConnell was very vocal in his opinions on the designs of both the interior and exterior. McConnell questioned the need of community hall, and the entire footprint of the building, with the concern of no space for parking. McConnell was the only vote not in favour of moving forward with the interior design of the new fire hall.

Construction is planned to start in July. The budget for the town’s new fire hall still sits around $5-million despite council choosing the heritage design which is $150,000 more than the streamline design..
