S.E.R.C.P. Recommends Getting Checked During Colon Cancer Awareness Month

The South East Regional Cancer Program is encouraging residents to get checked for colon cancer with their take home test.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and the program says when it is caught early, nine out of 10 cases can be cured.

It is recommended that men and women between the ages of 50 to 74 get checked, but Dr. Lawrence Hookey, Regional Lead of Endoscopy with the program, says colon cancer can be present long before physical symptoms show.

In 2016, 9,900 people in Ontario were diagnosed with colon cancer, which lead to 3,200 deaths.
