Following months of pleas by Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark, Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown has now also called for a moratorium to school closures in the province.
Brown’s call to the Liberal government was turned down yesterday at Queens Park, leaving Clark to question how genuine Premier Kathleen Wynne and Education Minister Mitzie Hunter’s intentions are at finding a viable solution to rural school closures.
Clark maintains that a simple vote is not the way to determine the future of schools in Leeds and Grenville. He reiterated that he thinks an all-party committee consisting of the government, the school board, and the municipalities should form together to come up with a responsible solution.
Clark says the vote could close one in four public schools in Leeds and Grenville. Around the Prescott area, both Maynard and Benson Public Schools are still scheduled to close by the Upper Canada District School Board.
A final vote on closures from the board of trustees will happen on March 23rd.
