Brockville Police are investigating after a resident lost $26,000 through a romance scam.
Police say the fraudster pretended to be military personnel that was in trouble overseas, and that a person in their 50’s was sending the money over a period of four to five months.
Sergeant Tom Fournier says the biggest warning signs of a romance scam are never meeting the person face to face and being asked to send money to overseas accounts.
Fournier says victims can often be too embarrassed to come forward, and require assistance from family or friends.
This falls in line with the warnings that the OPP and Brockville Police have put out this month regarding Fraud Prevention Month.
