Brockville Tunnel Railway Project Receives $250k

The Brockville Railway Tunnel restoration project has received $250,000 in funding from the Ontario 150 program.

Canada’s first railway tunnel is being renovated into a tourist attraction and an extension of the Brockville Trail.

Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark was on hand Friday to make the announcement with Brockville Mayor David Henderson and city councillor David LeSueur.

David LeSueur, Chair of the Railway Tunnel Committee, says the new funding will go directly to the high-end lighting being put in the tunnel, and is the same kind of lighting used on the Empire State building, Edinburgh Castle, and many different bridges around the world.

The tunnel committee has a fundraising goal of $3.9-million to aid in renovations. This new funding announcement brings the total amount raised so far to $3.1-million.

LeSueur says the city is planning a parade for the unveiling of the tunnel on August 12th, a celebration which will mimic the parade from 1854 when the first cornerstone of the tunnel was laid.
