All lanes on Highway 401 are now open after a multi-vehicle pile-up and chemical spill on Tuesday.
Leeds County OPP says at least 19 vehicles were involved in the initial crashes which then caused mass chain reactions.
The highway was closed for about 31 hours as Constable Sandra Barr says the spill had to be cleaned up first before investigators could move in to determine how the death of a transport driver happened.
Barr says a total of 27 people had to be sent to hospital for possible contamination with the chemical, consisting of 17 civilians, seven firefighters, and three police officers. Barr could only confirm that all of the police officers were later released Tuesday night.
The deceased driver has been identified as 45-year-old Ian Melville of Hamilton. The crash that killed Melville was the initial crash that took place just east of Highway 137, involving five tractor trailers and one car. This was also the scene where the chemical was spilled.
