Administration with Seaway District High School met with the Upper Canada District School Board last week to present their experience implementing the School Improvement Plan for Student Achievement.
Principal Don Lewis and Vice Principal Eric Barker reported that the school is using information from the EQAO results in a variety of ways. In literacy the data is used to determine students’ reading levels and strategies they use to take meaning from non-fiction text. This has allowed teachers to implement strategies like “think-alouds” where students say out-loud what they are thinking about while reading or responding to questions. The school is also encouraging teachers to use literacy strategies in subjects other than English because it is believed it will improve reading and writing.
Teachers are using the mathematics data to set clearer learning goals and success criteria, which allows students to know what they should have learned by lesson’s end and what is required to be successful. There are a number of different forms of assessment being used to see what students know, and how they are learning. This is helping teachers figure out which strategies work best for assisting students meet their full potential.
