Scammers are at it again in the area.
Leeds OPP Detachment says some residents are getting calls from impostors pretending to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. The OPP says the fraudsters will tell the potential victim that they owe thousands of dollars in back taxes to the CRA and they could go to jail if they don’t pay immediately.
Leeds OPP says not to take immediate action. They say you should hang up and verify the information. You can call a trusted family member, friend, or your bank to get a second opinion on the call. You can also contact the CRA directly at 1800-959-8281.
Leeds OPP says the CRA will never threaten arrest of send police. CRA agents will also not ask for payment through prepaid credit cards or gift cards.
You can report a scam to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
