Downtown Prescott gets a provincial boost

Main streets across Ontario are getting a boost from the provincial government.

The Ontario Government has announced they are investing up to $26 million dollars into the Main Street Revitalization Initiative. Some of that money is expected to land locally. According to the Ontario government Prescott will receive just less than $40,000 while the townships of Augusta and Edwardsburgh-Cardinal will both receive just over $42,000.

Economic Development Officer for the Town of Prescott Doctor Jackie Schoemaker-Holmes says the move works well with the town’s goal of revitalizing the downtown core through innovation. While she wasn’t able to say exactly what the money would be spend on Schoemaker-Holmes did say she believes the key is working closely with the BIA and building communal spaces downtown.

The initiative is meant to strengthen small businesses in downtown cores, while enhancing the same businesses’ digital capabilities, and is an extension of the Downtown Revitalization Program. The government says funding was determined based on population size, using the 2016 Census Data. The complete funding breakdown can be found here.
