Staff from South Grenville District High School has presented their plan for improving mathematic and literacy scores.
Principle Guy Lamarche and Vice Principles Kami Link and Ian Morris were on hand at the last Upper Canada District School Board meeting to discuss their approach to improving student’s scores on the EQAO tests. In literacy, teachers will be using examples of proper writing to show students the best method. All Grade 9 students will also be taking what is referred to as a “practice” Grade 10 literacy test. SGDHS is also offering an After-School Literacy Program for students interested in intensive instruction.
During math class students will have workshops that develop what the school calls a “growth mindset”, something they hope will give teachers and students confidence to try new teaching strategies. Students are encouraged to actively discuss and share how they reached the right answer so everyone learns together. Teachers are also being pushed to share what works in their classrooms with their peers.
The school also offers a nutrition program, Mental Health Team, Big Brothers and Connect Youth Program to help their students develop.
