A Brockville student is first in math March madness.
Licoln Lalonde of Vanier Public School placed first in Canada during daily competition in the Mathletics March Madness Contest. He was ranked first in the ongoing, nationwide contest that ranks students daily performance using an instructional program. He earned 10,000 points during a single day.
Lalonde says it’s a lot of fun to go on the program and answer questions while learning on his own. He adds that he is competitive so going up against other people is a lot of fun.
Vanier purchased the program as part of the Upper Canada District School Board’s ongoing efforts to improve math scores. Students test themselves on groups of 10 questions in things like number order, addition, multiplication, subtraction and division. Correct answers earn points and if you receive 1000 points in a week you receive a bronze certificate, ten bronze earn a silver and five silvers can be turned in for a gold.
Lalonde says he wants to see how far he can go up the leaderboard and is considering a career designing computer portals.
