Funding From the Healthy Kids Community Challenge is Coming to the Area

Funds are coming to help make children in the area more active.

The Healthy Kids Community Challenge Leeds and Grenville is giving out close to $50,000 for projects that meet the goals of its Power Off and Play initiative. Challenge Co-Facilitator Alexis Green says they’re encouraging everyone to put down their screened devices, especially at certain times.

According to Green you have a better chance of getting a good night sleep if you eliminate screens right before bed. She notes that it’s a balance, since people are on them for work and school. The Prescott Lawn Bowling Club, Brockville Public Library and Town of Prescott have all been approved for funding through the project. Green says she’s thrilled to see so many unique and interesting activities in the community.

Green finished by pointing out there are recommendations for the amount of screen time people should have. Children under two years old shouldn’t have any time on screens according to Green, it goes up to an hour for 2 to four year olds and then anyone between five and 17 should be capped at two hours. These numbers come from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.
