The OPP has released steps to follow if you are walking at dawn, dusk or after dark.
The first step is to wear reflective gear so others can see you. OPP say walking clothing should have reflective stripes in the front, back and down the sides. A reflective safety vest is an example of clothing they suggest wearing.
The next step is making sure you light your way. Using a lightweight flashlight is a way to do this. OPP note you could come across dark spots even when you’re walking in areas that have streetlights.
Police say avoid distracted walking at night as well. Cell phones are a big source of distraction with texting and emails. The OPP says night vision won’t be as sharp if you’re looking at a screen instead of looking ahead. Also, people should be aware of vehicles around them too.
They also want to make sure pets are visible as well. The OPP say there are different ways to make sure everyone can see a pet walking, including: leash lights, blinking collars, and brightly coloured harnesses.
