Hunger Action Month Set For September

Hunger Action Month is a campaign happening across Canada from September first to the 30th. It’s to help raise awareness of hunger in local communities and also encourage people to take action.

Bonnie Pidgeon Cougler is the Executive Director of the Food For All Food Bank, and says last year Ontario food banks were visited by almost half a million people. She adds 40-percent of the people they serve in the South Grenville area are children.

“Hunger touches very many different demographics including: students, recent grads, adults living with disabilities and those who have recently hit a rough patch in their life.”

This year, the food bank in Prescott is doing the Hunger Awareness Challenge. Anyone can sign up and choose to live on food supplied by the food bank from September 10th to the 14th. A $25 donation will provide the experience of using a food bank for an entire week.

Pidgeon Cougler says there’s many ways hunger awareness can be spread through the community.

“Do some fundraising, or you can come and volunteer at the food bank, I can go talk to schools. So, there’s lots of different things people can do.”

Food For All Food Banks are in Prescott, Cardinal and Spencerville. Anyone interested in learning more about spreading awareness can contact Bonnie at [email protected], 613-925-2444 extension 2 or visit the food bank’s website here.
