OPP Reminds Public Of Safety On Roads As School Year Begins

The OPP is reminding drivers and students to be safe on the roads as the new school year starts.

The Leeds Detachment of the OPP want drivers to be aware of more pedestrians, cyclists and school buses on the road as school begins. They also remind you to give yourself extra time when driving.

The OPP says vehicles must stop and not pass a school bus when it is stopped and has the red overhead signal lights flashing. The minimum fine for not stopping for a school bus is $400 and six demerit points. This rule applies if you are following or meeting a bus and includes multi-lane roads.

Police add motorists should also be prepared to yield to pedestrians and cyclists. Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about the rules of the road that apply to them, if they are walking or riding their bike to school.
