Black History Ottawa Examine The Highs And Lows Of Black History In Canada

With Black History Month nearing a close, Black History Ottawa is letting you know how you can make a difference in the fight against systemic racism.

The group has been hosting events all through the month to highlight the inequalities black people face on a regular basis, and how we can work to create a more inclusive Canada.

Sarah Onyango is the Public Relations Coordinator for Black History Ottawa, and she says there’s still lots of work to be done in terms of equality for people of African descent.

“People have become more and more aware of systemic racism, which is not to be confused with individual racism,” Onyango said. “Systemic racism, and anti-black racism is one of the main reasons we continue to need Black History Month.”

While Black History Month began in the U.S. in the 70s, it only started in Canada in 1995.

Onyango says since that time, there have been many improvements to the treatment of black Canadians, however, there have also been massive missteps, leading to tragedy.

She points to the 2016 death of Ottawa resident Abdirahman Abdi as an example.

“It has been proven before George Floyd that black communities have been in jeopardy,” Onyango said. They have been under threat, and they have been under stress wherever you find them in the diaspora of Canada.”

Fortunately, Onyango says nowadays people are beginning to stand up and speak out against systemic racism when they see it in action.

She says this is a positive sign that we’re moving in the right direction.

“The first thing that happens is everyone has their cell phone out, they press play, and they are recording what’s happening,” she said. “In some cases, I have seen some white people actually step up and ask: why are you doing this, why are you arresting this person, was it necessary for you to throw them on the ground like that.”

To help increase the public’s awareness, knowledge and appreciation of African culture, you can make a donation to Black History Ottawa.
