St. Lawrence College Receiving $6.4 Million To Help With Impacts Of COVID-19

St. Lawrence College is getting a big boost to help with pandemic related costs.

The government of Ontario announced $6.4 million in funding to help the school address the financial impacts of COVID-19.

MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes Steve Clark says this investment will help students get the skills they need for in-demand jobs of today and tomorrow.

“COVID-19 has put an additional strain on Universities and Colleges, including St. Lawrence College”, Clark said. “As our area transitions into recovery and rebuilding mode, we will need SLC to be stable, strong, and ready, on all three campuses, to prepare graduates for the employment possibilities that will exist.”

The funding is part of Ontario’s total investment of $106.5 million for postsecondary institutions who have been the most financially impacted by COVID-19.

It helps to offset pandemic related costs, including online learning, personal protective equipment and enhanced cleaning.

President and CEO at St. Lawrence Glenn Vollebregt says this support will have an immediate impact on the college and student, and will benefit the communities they serve.

“Our Kingston, Brockville, and Cornwall campuses have strong connections to employers and industry throughout Eastern Ontario and beyond, and this investment will protect us from lost momentum related to the pandemic,” Vollebregt said. “I am very thankful Ontario’s government sees the value colleges and our students provide, and we will continue working together towards a full recovery from COVID-19 and its effects.”

The funding is on top of $25 million the province gave to colleges, universities and Indigenous institutes earlier in the pandemic, to help address their most pressing needs.
