Prescott Approves RiverWalk District Cleaning Strategy For 2021

Prescott residents can expect a cleaner and safer downtown for the summer.

Town Council met earlier this week, where they heard a presentation on the RiverWalk District Cleaning Strategy for 2021, which will improve the cleanliness of the area and develop processes that could carry into the future.

Mayor Brett Todd says the area is the heart of Prescott and the town wants to create an unforgettable experience for residents and visitors.

“We did approve the clean strategy,” Todd said. “I asked staff to come back with this just to make sure we were really paying attention coming out of the pandemic.”

Todd says that creating a clean and safe downtown is vital toward downtown revitalization.

The strategy will be completed in collaboration with the Downtown BIA and with help from business owners.

The streets of the downtown that would be made a priority include King Street from East Street to St. Lawrence Street, Water Street from Edward Street to the Coast Guard, street portions of Centre Street and George Street, and pathways including RiverWalk Park, the Heritage River Trail and the Kinsmen Amphitheatre.

Todd says the goal is to ensure that the area will be cleaned to a very high level all summer.

“Keeping the downtown spick and span, no weeds, no litter, and just really doing the best we can to put our best foot forward as people rub their eyes and go out into the daylight for the first time in a while after this lockdown,” Mayor Todd said. “We know people will be travelling as we come out of COVID, and we hope they’ll stop in Prescott”

In addition to the strategy, the Prescott BIA presented a pole wrap solution that would provide a colourful way to improve the look of the traffic lights on King Street at Edward Street, George Street, Center Street and St. Lawrence Street.

The BIA has committed $2,500 towards the purchase and installation of traffic pole wraps using a design that features the look of the Town of Prescott signs at the entrances to the town.
