Prescott residents are being reminded to take advantage of the town’s Commemorative Tree program.
Mayor Brett Todd says it’s an opportunity to honour the memory of a loved one who’s passed away, celebrate a marriage or birth, or to mark any other special occasion.
“Essentially it’s a bit of a successor program for our park bench program, where people could purchase commemorative benches,” Todd said. “We’re sort of transitioning a little bit away from that.”
Families and groups will select a park and type of tree from a pre-supplied list.
Currently, applicants can choose to have their commemorative tree planted in Fairway Park, Centennial Park, Heritage River Trail.
The cost of a commemorative tree is $400, which includes taxes, and covers the cost of planting the tree and the maintenance.
An optional inscribed placard is available for an additional $150.
Todd says these trees have been specifically chosen for their growth potential, and as complements to the existing urban forest.
“This is so we can actually build up our green-coverage with trees,” Todd said. “We’re just offering people the opportunity to possibly commemorate loved ones and also help green up our spaces in Prescott.”
Trees will be planted by municipal staff in either the spring or the fall, weather permitting.
