After an 11-year-old girl was hit by a truck trying to cross a road and man’s body was pulled from a lake, Ontario Provincial Police and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs are urging riders to stop taking unnecessary risks. Those are just two of the recent six deaths that have occurred.
The OPP say the number of snowmobile deaths this winter is already above last year’s total at this time, sitting at 13 compared to eight.
Many of these deaths have occurred from snowmobilers riding on unsafe ice, speeding, drinking, or losing control.
OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair says many of these deaths have not been accidents, but rather preventable occurrences.
