Province Announces Process To Review School Closures

The provincial government has announced in a letter that they will be undertaking a review process of the pupil accommodation review threatening to close rural schools.

The announcement came the same day PC Leader Patrick Brown’s request for a moratorium on the closures was rejected.

Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark said a letter was sent out from the Education Minister Mitzie Hunter, outlining the province’s process, with no mention of a moratorium or the pupil accommodation review guidelines.

It says the government’s process will not impede any decisions made by the board of trustees to close schools on March 23rd.

Clark says he is frustrated with the timing of the process. With the closures vote just two weeks away, he believes this new process will do nothing to stop one fourth of Leeds and Grenville’s public schools from closing.

A total of 12 schools in the Upper Canada District School are still slated for closure, including Maynard Public School and Benson Public School.
