The Canada 150 Garden Experience designation has been given to the 1000 Islands and Rideau Canal Garden Trail.
The award gives international recognition and highlights 150 garden ways to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.
David Cybulski of the Maitland Garden of Hope says garden tourism is the number one growing tourist attraction in Canada. He also says it’s big contributor to local economies, with visitors buying plants, local food, and staying in area hotels and bed and breakfasts when they visit.
Studies have shown that over 13 million North Americans visit public gardens per year while on overnight trips to Ontario.
The Rideau Canal Garden Trail was established in 2015 and has expanded to 14 private and public gardens across Leeds and Grenville, including the Shakespeare’s Gardens in Prescott.
